介入的（interventive）な保存修復手当て、すなわちコンサベーションを行うときに、その手当てが資料のモノとして安定化（stabilization）に結びつくのかどうかを評価試験することは保存科学の守備範囲になる。図書や文書などの紙媒体記録物を対象にした保存科学は、1980年代の酸性紙問題の提起を待って欧米で本格的な取り組みが行われるようになり、その歴史はまだ新しいが、それでも文献を遡れば、評価試験という切り口だけでも、1950年代から今日まで、先人が営々と積み重ねてきた実績がある。私たちのようなコンサベーションの現場に在るものにとって、こうした知見はなによりありがたい。「より良い手当て」、「最良ではないかもしれないが、すくなくとも最悪ではない手当て」を選び、適用しようとするときに、裏付けとなるのが保存科学での評価試験の知見だからだ。以下、1950年代から今日までの「コンサベーションのための評価試験」の主要な文献として300余を挙げ、可能な限りアブストラクトや、場合によってはウェブ上の原文へのリンクを付けた。
